What Are the Key Selection Criteria for Victorian Teacher Aides?
You’ll notice that Victorian government teacher aide selection criteria tend to be the same across most roles:
SC1. Demonstrated capacity to perform duties consistent with established guidelines and frameworks, including coordinating and supporting others in respect to specific work functions relevant to the role.
SC2. Demonstrated capacity to work and collaborate with others in a team environment.
SC3. Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively in a team environment, including high level oral and written communication skills.
SC4. Possess the technical knowledge and expertise relevant to the position.
SC5. Demonstrated capacity to provide advice and support to management and other school staff in respect to the work area.
SC6. A commitment to professional learning and growth for both self and others.
Each criterion requires a short statement (3/4 – 1 page) with clear, concrete examples of how you meet the requirements (you should use the STAR formula i.e. Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Teacher Aide Key Selection Criteria Responses Examples:
Example #1: SC1 Demonstrated capacity to perform duties consistent with established guidelines and frameworks, including coordinating and supporting others in respect to specific work functions relevant to the role.
As an experienced teacher aide, I have a sound understanding of the role, and the need to adhere to established guidelines and frameworks. I am committed to working under The Disability Standards for Education in the Australian Disability Discrimination Act 1992, to ensure students with disabilities can participate in education on the same basis as students without disability. As a teacher aide, I have worked with students (under the DET Program for Students with Disabilities), with intellectual disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Down syndrome, autism, severe cerebral palsy and more. I have provided direct support for students one on one and in small groups. I have focused on supporting teacher lessons and helping the students to learn based on their individual capacities.
Example #2: SC2 Demonstrated capacity to work and collaborate with others in a team environment.
When I commenced in my role at Example Primary School, there was a lack of consistency between teachers about my role within classrooms. When I attended specialist classes like Art or LOTE, I was sometimes expected to fulfil different roles than with my leading teacher. This was also the case for other teacher aides in the school. The school recognised this issue, and a meeting was arranged for teachers and teacher aides to discuss this. I was able to provide my perspective and provide input into the formulation of a clear set of guidelines on roles and expectations for teacher aides. This was very successful, and has contributed to shared understanding of this role, and consistent expectations between all staff.
Note that normally, ΒΎ to a page is needed per criterion. These examples would need to be elaborated upon in your own response.
