Australian Teacher Cover Letter Guide (+Examples)

by | Apr 15, 2025 | Career Advice, Cover Letters, Examples

A well-written cover letter is usually essential for securing a role. However, for teaching roles, each state and territory has its own specific application requirements and expectations. In this guide, we break down what teacher applicants need to know for each region, and provide detailed teacher cover letter examples.

Application Guidelines for Each State and Territory

While some Australian Education Departments require a teacher cover letter in addition to a teacher resume, others require a selection criteria response instead. Below, we outline each region’s preferences:

New South Wales Dept. of Education

When applying for NSW teacher roles, applicants are required to submit a resume and selection criteria response. Review selection criteria guidelines and an example response here. The department’s website states: “if the applicant wishes to also attach a cover letter, they may do so and this would not count towards the page limit described in the guidelines“.

Your NSW teacher cover letter should be written in a minimum of 10-point font, with standard business margins (approximately 2.5cm from each side of the document). There are no restrictions on font style (applicants should use professional judgment for readability).

Queensland Dept. of Education

Some job listings on SmartJobs explicitly request a teaching cover letter as part of the application package. In such cases, the cover letter serves as your introduction and an opportunity to highlight your relevant experience and attributes. It’s advisable to prepare a concise, one or two-page cover letter tailored to the specific position and school, even if not explicitly requested, as it can strengthen your application.

Western Australia Dept. of Education

Prospective teachers in WA are required to submit a statement of up to four (4) pages, demonstrating your Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice, and Professional Engagement aligned with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the context of the position and school. This serves in place of a cover letter.

South Australia Dept. of Education

The process for applying for teaching positions in South Australia with the SA Department of Education has changed for 2025. Applicants are now required to submit an Applicant Profile and Positioning Statement, which can be completed and uploaded directly via EduJobs. Read an applicant profile example, including answers to the capability questions.

Tasmania Dept. of Education

Prospective Tasmanian teachers are required to submit a statement addressing the selection criteria, in place of a cover letter.

Australian Capital Territory Dept. of Education

If you want to apply for a teaching role in the ACT, you’ll need to submit a statement (maximum three pages) outlining how your practical experience aligns with the seven AITSL Standards (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers). You won’t need to submit an additional cover letter.

Northern Territory Dept. of Education

To identify positions currently advertised an applicant can go to the NT government jobs website. You will need to check each vacancy to determine if a cover letter is needed.

Independent and Catholic Schools

Independent and Catholic schools vary widely in their teacher application requirements. They typically expect a one-page cover letter focusing on professional experience and alignment with school values, and in some cases, faith-based teaching philosophy.

Final Tips

Regardless of the state or territory, follow these key guidelines:

  • Tailor your letter to the job and school.
  • Address the selection criteria explicitly if required.
  • Keep it concise and professional.
  • Use specific examples to demonstrate your experience and skills.

By understanding each state’s specific requirements, you can develop a compelling teacher cover letter that enhances your job application and improves your chances of securing a teaching role.
