3 Step Method to Write Your Cover Letter

1. Brainstorm Examples in the Context of the Role Fit and ‘About the Role’

Consider Your Recent ‘Career Highlights’

For example:

  • Have you received any awards or recognition?
  • Were you selected to perform a higher-level role?
  • Did you get a really challenging project across the line?

Consider how you can ‘frame’ these achievements to align with the context of the role you are applying for.

Consider Your ‘USP’

Consider your ‘Unique Selling Proposition’ – i.e. what makes you different from others applying? How can you demonstrate his, in the form of actual examples of what you have done? Remember to frame it in the context of the role.

2. Write Your Examples Using the STAR Format

The STAR Method is the traditional way that selection criteria is responded to. It is an easy way to structure each of your examples.  It goes like this:

Situation: What role were you in? When? Be as specific as possible. Reference the role, and context of what happened next.

Task: Describe what you needed to do.

Action: What did you actually do? Be specific. Highlight what you PERSONALLY did.

Result: What was the result of your actions? How did your intervention/ action improve things/ resolve the issue? Results should be specific, and use quantifiable metrics wherever possible.

STAR Method Example:

[Situation] “In my previous role as a marketing coordinator at ABC Company, we were preparing for the launch of a new product in a highly competitive market.”

[Task] “My task was to develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan to ensure a successful product launch and achieve our sales targets.”

[Action] “I conducted thorough market research to identify our target audience and key competitors. I then developed a multi-channel marketing campaign that included social media, email marketing, and in-store promotions. I also collaborated with the sales team to create promotional materials and trained them on product features.”

[Result] “The marketing campaign resulted in a 25% increase in pre-launch product inquiries and a 15% increase in sales within the first month of the launch. Additionally, the product received positive feedback from customers and was featured in several industry publications.”

3. Boost Your application Using Keywords and Phrases From the Leadership Competencies

You can do this by scanning the list of keywords and phrases in the Leadership Competencies for Queensland document and working out which ones fit with your examples.
